On last Saturday night, the Bishop's University Women's Basketball team won 76-68 against the Laval Rouge et Or, improving to 8 wins and 2 losses on the season putting them in first place in the RSEQ. Amaiquen Siciliano had 27 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds while Jael Kabunda had a double-double dropping 19 points and 18 rebounds. A reason why they were able to pull off the win was that they outscored the Rouge et Or in the paint 46-26. While this was a great game for Bishops that was not the focus as it was their annual shoot for the cure game which raises awareness for breast cancer. Shoot for the cure is the U SPORTS Women’s Basketball breast cancer fundraising initiative to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) – and other related local and provincial charities. Since 2007 the campaign has raised over $1.75 million in donations to date from all 48 U SPORTS women’s basketball programs, which is truly an amazing accomplishment and more U SPORTS leagues should defiantly take note. The shoot for the cure means a lot to the players, so the way they went out there and had an amazing game made the night even better. We talked to Bishop's Point Guard Amaiquen Siciliano before the game and she said, “Playing in pink means we are playing for all women. About 1/8 of women get diagnosed with breast cancer. I think shoot for the cure is an amazing event that every sport should have. Playing to help the cause, helping to raise funds to find a cure, is just amazing. Many women are going through breast cancer and it is not easy to get the treatments and resources available to everyone. Us, playing to support the advancements on research is the minimum we can do”. This just puts into perspective why basketball can be more than just a sport and why the shoot for the cure campaign is so important for women around the world.
